The Coopers’ Company held its annual Common Hall meeting on Monday 18th May at Brewers' Hall, once again attracting an excellent attendance.
Admittance of new Members
Prior to the commencement of Common Hall, a Special Court Meeting was held at which we were delighted to admit four new Freemen, together with 14 members progressing to the Livery. Those joining or advancing to the Livery are entitled to vote for the Master Elect and Wardens Elect. Newly admitted Freemen are also invited to attend Common Hall, although without voting rights at this stage. They are encouraged to obtain their Freedom of the City at the earliest opportunity and, in due course, progress to the Livery.
As this year’s Common Hall took place before the end of May 2026, our newly admitted Liverymen will be eligible to vote in the 2027 City elections for the Sheriffs and the Lord Mayor for the ensuing year.
Stave Group
The Master was delighted to present commemorative engraved staves to two new members of the Stave Group in recognition of their generous support of The Coopers' Charity CIO. We extend our sincere thanks to all who contribute so generously to the Charity’s work.
Reception and Dinner
After the formal proceedings, guests enjoyed a drinks reception accompanied by music from our own talented pianist, Claire Habbershaw who additionally accompanied the National Anthem and Sung Grace. This was followed by an excellent three-course dinner prepared by CH&CO, caterers to Brewers' Hall and Coopers' Hall among others, accompanied by selected wines, before concluding with coffee and chocolates.
The year 2026–2027 will mark another significant first in the history of the Coopers’ Company. On 2nd June 2026, Society President Laura Miller will be installed as the new Under Warden, while her father, Tony Miller, will become Master of the Company. On the evening both the Under Warden Elect and Master Elect made speeches which were made from the heart.
One member commented to the Master Elect
“…aspects of the evening were unique, heartfelt, sincere and emotional without being the least bit ’soppy’: perfectly judged …… you must have been very proud.”
We look forward to what promises to be a memorable and enjoyable year, with Members of both the Company and the Society coming together to celebrate this unique occasion through a number of newly organised joint events.
Official photographs from the occasion are now available for Members to view and download free of charge from the Gallery section of the Members’ website.
