From Taskmaster to Caskmaster: The Coopers’ Cask Race featured by Londonist
We were delighted to see the Coopers’ Cask Race featured by Londonist, with a headline from Will Noble that perfectly captures the unique spirit of the event: “You’ve Heard Of Taskmaster, Now Meet Caskmaster.”
The article explores the story behind the race and how it has become one of the City’s most distinctive annual traditions. It highlights why we launched the event in 2021 as a way of being more outward-looking and engaging with the wider community, as well as why Guildhall Yard provides the perfect backdrop for the competition.
It also delves into the fascinating history of the site, where faulty casks were once brought for destruction, making it a fitting location for a modern celebration of the cooper’s craft.
One of the race’s most memorable traditions is the pre-race blessing. This began after the very first race, when the summer heat caused the casks’ wooden staves to shrink, sending hoops flying off during the competition. Since then, the blessing has become an established part of the day’s proceedings.
